Have You Ever Seen a Smoking Monkey?

I’m not sure I understand the purpose of a smoking, singing monkey except maybe for a tobacco advertisement. I can see Marlboro trying to compete with the long dead Joe Camel by using an animated singing monkey. It isn’t clear as to the contents in the monkey’s pipe but whatever it is he looks like he’s sleepy and keeps singing the same tune over and over in between short 5 second naps.
